An Ormond Beach Police officer died on Friday, Dec. 1 died after suffering a medical incident during training two weeks ago, the city of Ormond Beach and police department announced.
Officer Michael Bakaysa worked for OBPD for over 27 years. Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey in a phone call with the Observer said it was a huge loss for the department. Bakaysa was 54.
"Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of not just a colleague, but a friend, a mentor, and a hero in our community," a statement on both the city and OBPD's Facebook page read. "Officer Bakaysa's commitment to serving and protecting the people of Ormond Beach was unwavering, and his absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. We extend our deepest sympathies to Officer Bakaysa’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Your loss is immeasurable, and we stand with you in grief."
A service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Daytona Beach Drive-in Christian Church, located at 3140 S. Atlantic Ave. in Daytona Beach Shores. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ormond Beach Police Cadet program in Bakaysa's name are welcome. Checks may be made out to the Ormond Beach Police Cadets, at the attention of Capt. DW Smith, and mailed to the police station at 170 W. Granda Blvd., Ormond Beach, FL, 32175.
Prior to his service, a local law enforcement procession will take place, beginning eastbound on Granada Boulevard from Nova Road and through the downtown district between 12:45 p.m. and 1 p.m. The procession will travel southbound on South Atlantic Avenue through Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach and Daytona Beach Shores.
OBPD asked the community on its Facebook page to pay its respects to Bakaysa during the procession.
