The Bulldogs took fourth place at the Lyman Invitational Dec. 17. They will compete in the Disney National Duals Dec. 27.
All 22 members of the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs wrestling team will head to Disney World right after Christmas, and coach Bobby Bossardet said his team is working hard to make a name for itself.
The Bulldogs took fourth place Dec. 17 and Dec. 18, at the Lyman Christmas Invitational, finishing 16 points behind third-place Winter Springs. Winter Springs is currently third in the state, Bossardet said, and won its respective district and conference titles last season.
Riverdale High School (274.5 points) took first place, followed by Lake Highland Prep (229 points), Winter Springs (177.5 points), FPC (161.5 points) and DeLand (140 points) rounded out the Top 5. Bossardet said DeLand won the 5-Star Conference last season.
“We’re where we need to be right now, but we have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be at the end of the season,” Bossardet said.
The Bulldogs brought 10 wrestlers to the Lyman tourney; seven placed in the top eight. Seniors J.Z. Williams (135 pounds) and Johnny Barrett (189 pounds) won their weight classes, while 215-pounder Nick Shaw was runner-up.
Heading into the Disney National Duals next week, Williams boasts an undefeated record at 21-0. Barrett is 19-2 on the season, and Nick Shaw is 20-1.
This will be the first time the Bulldogs will compete in the Disney tournament since they won the 2003 tournament.
“We’re going to bang our heads around with some good competition and see what we got,” Bossardet said.
MHS PREPS FOR JANUARY
The Matanzas wrestling team went 7-0 over a two-day span at the River City Duals Dec. 17 and Dec. 18, winning its second-consecutive tournament.
“We are going in the right direction heading into January —the heart of the season,” said coach John White.
Three Pirates went undefeated in the tournament: Sal Infante, Tyler Wilkinson and Tony Mendez all went 7-0.
The Pirates will begin their second half of the season Jan. 8, 2011 at the Clay Rotary Tournament.
The Matanzas wrestling program has also won 99 matches, and will have the opportunity to get its 100th win in January, White said.
