The Humane Society adopted out 20 animals in the first hour Saturday, Oct. 30, at their fall festival.
The shelter parking lot was booming with vendors, volunteers and past adoptees with their parents.
“It’s an opportunity to bring animals with you,” said Jef Hale, shelter director. “We need more pet-people events in the community.”
The event also celebrated the first Humane Hero Awards. The awards recognized individuals in the community who have supported the shelter.
“We just felt it was time to recognize them — pay them back,” Hale said.
The 2010 Humane Heroes were attorney Bob Cuff, who had donated many hors of legal advice; Kim and Brian Hammond, of Acme Trophy, who have donated 121 plaques over the years; Bill and Zoee Forehand, of the Flagler Beach Farmers Market, for allowing the shelter space each weekend; Jacque Estes, columnist for The Daytona Beach News-Journal; and Sam Cline, of Cline Construction, who has donated resources to help grade the driveway.
Next year, Hale said more heroes will be recognized following a new nomination procedure.
