Earth Day, April 22, 1970, signified the birth of the modern environmental movement in the United States.

Now, Earth Day is celebrated around the globe.

The Friends of Washington Oaks Gardens State Park held their 22nd-annual Earth Day Celebration Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17, at the park.

The two-day event featured live entertainment, history re-enactments, environmental groups and arts and crafts vendors.

This year, new to the celebration, International Marine Ecological Research Solutions Inc. put on classroom-style boat tours of the Intracoastal Waterway. In addition, the Georgia Aquarium’s Dolphin Conservation Field Station showcased its marine mammal rescue response equipment.
