The following release was sent by Carol Lemieux, treasurer of the city of Palm Coast Historical Society:
The Welcome Center at Palm Coast was the first building erected in our community and was the centerpiece of the official grand opening of Palm Coast, which took place Oct. 29, 1970.
Much of the tremendous growth in Palm Coast through the early 1990s came from sales generated at the Welcome Center. However, it was sold after ITT left the community in 1995, and the building was torn down.
But Oct. 29 was declared Founders Day in 2010, and the first official observance was held last year. Many early Palm Coast pioneers were present and recognized. In conjunction with this year’s Founders Day celebration, the city of Palm Coast Historical Society is sponsoring a competition to build a scale model of the Welcome Center tower. There will be a $100 prize for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.
Photographs and dimensions will be provided to entrants. The final judging will take place in early October, and the winners will be announced at the 2011 Founders Day celebration.
