The Matanzas High School football team went 3-7 last season.

But coach Keith Lagocki has his team ready to break out in the second season running the spread offense. A new quarterback will be under center, and there will be new faces at several of the skill positions.

Lagocki knows that if his team is going to make a run at a district title, he has to get them ready now. And that’s exactly what he did recently when 14 playeres went on a weeklong trip to compete in two 7-on-7 tournaments. One was at Jacksonville State University, in Jacksonville, Ala., and the other was the Southwestern Georgia Select 7-on-7 tournament, in Moultrie, Ga.

The Pirates played a total of 31 games across five days — going 17-14 in the games.

“Going away for a week, it allows us to concentrate on nothing but football,” Lagocki said.

Bryan Dieudonne, who will be a junior when the season begins later this month, was the only QB to make the trip. Lagocki said he is likely to begin the season as the Pirates’ starting signal-caller, though Dieudonne still needs to work on his consistency level as he develops.

The Pirates went 12-8 at the JSU tournament, which they won.

“It was a great experience for the players and a great opportunity for the coaches to come together as a team and a unit,” Lagocki said.

Because the players play so many games in a short period of time, Lagocki said it helps the team get a head start as the players head into the upcoming season.

The Pirates will begin team practices 3-5:30 p.m. Aug. 8, at Matanzas High School.

All interested students enrolled with Matanzas High School and who have a physical on file are invited to the first day of team practice.
