The Grand Reserve Men’s Golf League has just joined the big boys by scheduling a Club Championship Tournament Sept. 7 and Sept. 14.

According to J.D. Norris, “There will be prizes galore, including the possibility of a free car for a hole-in-one during play.”

The only stipulation is that entrants must be members of the present men’s league — a league that has been growing by the week and is now approaching 70 members.

Norris, who cut his business teeth with Eastern Airlines, is pulling out all of the stops to make this a dandy. He cited a prize department that will have eyes popping — everything from golf equipment, valued gift certificates and the auto possibility.

The game will be played on consecutive Wednesdays, the regular Grand Reserve League game day. The cost to play is $5, and the final sign-up is Aug. 31.

Norris also said new members can be presently enrolled with Ray Epperson by showing up on game day by 8 a.m. Aug. 31.

Incidentally, the golf course is in downright beautiful condition — fairways and greens included.

A different kind of sport
As I look back and also into the future, I think 10 years from now, golf will make a huge difference on thousands of more lives than it does now.

Of all the sports to enjoy, golf is the only game that partners can play and play often. It’s the only game where tournaments are fashioned on once-a-week basis.

Now, for the big hitter, golf is the only game that companions can enjoy from high school to the ages of 80 and 90.

Think of the golfer in Portland, Maine, who at the age of 90, shot in the high-80s.

Many of us at any age would light up the world if we could break 90 just one time.

Think of the unexpected excitement felt by David Joy and Larry Wettlin when they shocked everyone, including themselves, by coming out of nowhere to win the Pine’s Beat the Pros game.

Ed Mylis, John West, Jerry Conner and Bob Schultz were second-place finishers.

I know golf at many places is in the doldrums right now because of the economy. But look ahead 10 years, and I promise you’ll see this game taking off like a rocket.
