The second-annual Palm Coast City Golf Championships will take place Aug. 27 to Aug. 28, at Palm Harbor.
The Professional Golf Association tour is winding down, but the quest for Palm Coast golf prominence is just setting up its tee.
The second-annual Palm Coast City Golf Championships will take place Aug. 27 to Aug. 28, at the Palm Harbor Golf Club.
The tournament will be a two-day, 36-hole competition. Last year’s tournament was one day.
Jeff Ryan, head golf professional at the Palm Harbor Golf Club, said the tournament is open to Palm Coast residents as well as nonresidents. He said it was expanded to two days to stay in line with most city and club championships.
“It takes a lot of time and effort to make (the tournament) two days,” Ryan said. “You have to create a good reputation before people are willing to pay a little bit of extra money to play two days.”
Last year’s tournament entrance fee was $60. This year’s fee is $125. So far, about 30 golfers are signed up to play, and registration is still open.
“It’s typical for golfers to sign up in the last 10 days,” he said.
The tournament will be flighted by handicaps and will include the following divisions: juniors 9 and under; juniors ages 10 to 13; juniors 14 to 17; women’s division; men’s division; and the senior division for golfers older than 55.
“The course should be fantastic by then,” he said. “We have done all of our summer aerifications and route maintenance. This whole month is in preparation to get the golf course to be dialed in.”
Golfers interested in competing in the event may call the Palm Harbor Golf Club at 986-4653 or stop by at 20 Palm Harbor Parkway.
