Sometime ago, I heard great advice in a speech by Bill Delbrugge, former Flagler Schools superintendant. He said, “Your job as CEO is to surround yourself with good people and to strive to make your company run better without you.” He was right.

Last month we reported our sister Observer papers — Longboat Key, Sarasota and East County — swept the top three spots in general excellence for large community newspapers by the Florida Press Association.

Our staff, along with five other publications and 65 other Observer Group employees, attended our company’s annual meeting and award ceremony Aug. 4, in Sarasota.

Listen up, readers: I am surrounded by good — make that great — people on staff here at the Palm Coast Observer. Our staff went to the podium six out of 17 times to claim our Standing “O” Awards. Mallorie Bruce, design editor, and Shanna Fortier, staff writer, won in the Rookie of Year category for their dedication and passion when performing their duties. Jaci Beckett, advertising manager, accepted her award for Best Team Leader. Andrew O’Brien, sports editor walked away the award for Outstanding Writer. Brian McMillan, managing editor was honored as runner-up for our Top Tomatoes Awards (come by the office for visual explanation of Top Tomatoes). And finally, our entire staff was awarded with the Top Tomato for being the best newspaper in the family of six Observer Group publications.

With a performance like that in just 18 months of publishing, chances are this thing will run better without me. Someday.

Observer staff, you guys make me proud.
