The tournament, which takes place in Raleigh, N.C., helps players showcase their talents for potential college programs.
FC United of Florida sent four boys travel soccer teams to compete in the Capital Area Soccer League boys college showcase Dec. 2 to Dec. 4, in Raleigh, N.C. The tournament is put on by Chelsea FC, of the English Premier League, and one of the top soccer clubs in the world.
FC United sent its U15, U16, U17 and U18 age groups to the tournament.
Typically, more than 350 college coaches attend this tournament, according to Rich Weber, of FC United.
At the tournament, the U15 boys black team became the first FC United club team to win the tournament.
They went undefeated against teams from Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina.
In the final, FC United scored in the final 10 seconds to win the game.
Also, over the course of the weekend, players, coaches and parents had the opportunity to tour nearby college campuses, including UNC, Duke and Wake Forest.
Last month, the U17 FC United girls black team also competed at the women’s tournament, which featured more than 400 teams and 600 college coaches, Weber said.
Reg Monsanto, FC United president, said the experience for the players is invaluable.
“Everyone was exposed to the highest levels of soccer, as well as the opportunities to progress to the next level,” Monsanto said. “The fact that our teams competed, won games and our U15 boys won a championship was just the proverbial icing on the cake.”
