Over the past week, I have attended several high school basketball games, both boys and girls, for both Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools.
I got to see Flagler Palm Coast boys play against Mandarin last week.
There were a few things that stood out to me about the Bulldogs.
First off, coach Gary McDaniel is doing his best to create a true home-court advantage. The crowd was loud. The player introductions were NBA-esque. And the play on the court was intense.
Then, this past Saturday, I covered the matchup between FPC and Matanzas girls basketball.
FPC coach Javier Bevacqua is faced with a difficult task in replacing several key players, but he has senior Diajah Davis leading the way for some of the underclassmen, including freshman Armani Walker.
On the other side of the hardwood, Matanzas coach Brian Morris has brought the Lady Pirates program 180 degrees.
Matanzas has already won three games through the early part of the season, and there is a lot of basketball left to play. The players are buying into what Morris is teaching them.
I’ve also had the pleasure of covering the soccer teams.
Both boys programs for Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas have started the season off well. The girls team at Matanzas is dealing with injuries, and have had a rough start. The FPC girls team is off to a great start again under coach Pete Hald.
Now is a great time to get out and catch any of these teams. Don’t forget about both wrestling teams, as well as girls weightlifting.
Pick ’em winner
Steve Naso is this week’s Pick ’em winner! He successfully picked 12 out of the 16 games.
Remember, go to www.Palm CoastObserver.com and click on “Blogs,” then scroll down to my column, which is the last one on the page. I’ll have this week’s games posted to the blog before the start of the Thursday night game between Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
