Defense leads FPC to another win
Despite a slow start, the Flagler Palm Coast boys basketball team finished strong Thursday night en route to its second straight win.
The Bulldogs defeated Ponte Vedra, 58-40, despite being outscored 23-12 in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs improved to 5-1 this season.
FPC outscored Ponte Vedra 34-7 in the second half.
Tyler Hopkins led the Bulldogs in scoring with 16 points, including two 3-pointers. Malik Maitland scored 10 points, T.J. Alexander added nine. The Bulldogs hit five 3-pointers.
FPC hosts an in-school game 12 p.m. today, against Atlantic.
Lady Bulldogs topple University
Diajah Davis continues to lead the Flagler Palm Coast girls basketball team to wins.
Behind Davis, the Lady Bulldogs beat University, 65-30. FPC improved to 5-3.
Davis scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had nine steals and five assists.
Amanda Melendez had a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds, and also added three steals and three blocks. Freshman Armani Walker had 15 points.
FPC outscored University 37-8 in the second half.
FPC plays Sandalwood 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at home.
Matanzas girls soccer wins two in a row
The Lady Pirates soccer team is on a hot streak.
Matanzas beat Palatka, 5-0, Wednesday night, for its second straight win. Gabi Paiz, Haley McQueen, Leana Lourenco, Tshai Payne-Clark and Alyssa Santos each scored one goal.
Keeper Kaylee Cardigan earned her first career shutout.
Matanzas is now 2-7-1 this season, but coach Tony Benvenuto’s team has played some stiff competition. According to Benvenuto, through the first eight games, Matanzas played teams with a combined record of 56-4-12 — four of the teams were undefeated, and the other four only had one loss.
“The only way my girls are going to win at a high level is to play with quality teams,” Benvenuto said.
Paiz leads the team with seven goals and seven assists. McQueen, Lourenco, and Payne-Clark each have two goals.
Matanzas plays 7:30 p.m., at Nease.
FPC, Matanzas duel in wrestling
Flagler County wrestling bragging rights will be settled on the mat tonight.
FPC and Matanzas square off 7 p.m., at FPC.
Each team has won once in the past two years, with the away team winning each time. Last year, FPC won at Matanzas.
Junior varsity will begin at 6 p.m., with varsity immediately after. There will be 14 matches.
