Palm Coast is slowly becoming a destination for youth athletics tournaments.
At the Dec. 13 workshop meeting of the Palm Coast City Council, City Manager Jim Landon announced that another tournament is coming to town this weekend. This time, it’s baseball.
Luanne Santangelo, the city’s parks and recreation director, said there could be as many as 18 teams, depending on which age groups are approved.
The tournament will take place at the Indian Trails Sports Complex, which has been the home to several large tournaments in the past few months.
Earlier this year, there were two large lacrosse tournaments. Both tournaments featured more than 70 teams. Several soccer tournaments have taken place at the sports complex, too.
Also discussed at Tuesday’s meeting was the city’s Sports Alliance.
This was created partially in response to an issue a few months ago when the city debated implementing various athletics fees, such as charging for field use and for hosting tournaments in town.
The City Council has postponed implementing any fees, and has reached out to the various sports organization in town to create the Sports Alliance.
According to city documents, there are 16 representatives on the city’s Sports Alliance.
I think this is a great way to continue to develop sports tournaments in town.
These tournaments are economic drivers, and the more the city hosts successful tournaments, the more popular of a destination it will become.
The city didn’t add four more fields at Indian Trails Sports Complex for nothing!
