As the students walked out of the dark corridor and past the ticket station, they saw glimpses of snowmen and candy canes. After walking through the candy cane lane, some students bolted to the window of the elf workshop to catch a glimpse of the toy-making station. Others beelined for the tree and fireplace.
They were at the Old Kings Elementary School version of the North Pole: “The Polar Express” room.
Teacher-librarian Kim Weeks originally started the room, which has been a December classroom destination for the past three years.
“I thought it would be cool to have a magical place where kids can go and escape the school setting — to have this wonderful reading place,” Weeks said.
And each year the vision has grown and improved, with the help of parents, who do the decorating. This year, the room was staged in an empty classroom, but the location changes every year.
Every inch of the room is covered, including the white board, which was transformed into a window view with reindeer peeking in.
Weeks said that she hopes for the idea of this snowy wonderland to travel to other schools within the district.
“I just love it for the kids,” she said.
