The Flagler Palm Coast High School boys soccer team beat crosstown opponent Matanzas High School, 3-1, Friday, Dec. 16, at Sal Campanella Stadium.

FPC (8-1-0) took control of the game early with a goal from Jonathan Kusek.

The game went into half time with FPC leading, 1-0.

Shortly into the second half, Matanzas (3-3-2) drew even when Austin Tucker found the back of the net.

Possession went back and forth until German exchange student Max Eisele scored, giving FPC a 2-1 advantage.

“You would think that we would have had all the momentum after that, but the opposite happened,” said FPC assistant coach Reg Monsanto. “Max’s goal energized Matanzas and they started outplaying us.”

The Bulldogs held on and withstood pressure put on by the Pirates.

FPC’s coaches knew a 2-1 lead wasn’t going to be enough.

But FPC breathed a sigh of relief when Eisele scored again on a penalty kick to ice the game.

“We need to play more games like that one,” Monsanto said. “Smart soccer. Not be scared of tough battles. We need to stay focused.”
