They say the medical field is immune to economic downturns. A home health agency on East Moody Boulevard is one company that helps that argument.

Always Best Care started serving clients in their homes with baths, meals and other services in May 2010.

From October to December, the number of health care hours it had on the books jumped from 500 to 1,000.

In January, the company hired 10 certified nurse assistants and home health aides, bringing its total employees to 32.

“Health care is, of course, one thing that’s not affected by the economy as much,” said Will Weathers, senior marketing director. “People are still going to get sick and need care — especially as the baby boomer generation ages.”

Weathers added that his company’s success also could provide a view into the best way to grow the local economy.

“Economic development wants to spend a million to bring 90 jobs here,” Weathers said. “We’ve done it without government funds. I’m sure the other home health agencies have been doing that, too. I don’t think people realize how many jobs home health agencies provide.”

In the future, Weathers said, home health will continue to be important.

“The government just can’t put everyone in a nursing home,” he said. “It’s not financially feasible. They’re already having problems funding Medicare now.”

Weathers said he’s planning to continue hiring — possibly with 10 more in another couple of months.

Flagler Technical Institute offers programs in home health care, he said. Apply to Always Best Care at 4750 E. Moody Blvd., Suite 211. Call 437-0200.
