+ Matanzas, FPC cheer squads successful at states
Both the Flagler Palm Coast (Class 2A)and Matanzas (1A) high school varsity cheerleading squads took third place in their respective classes Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Florida High School Athletic Association’s small non-tumbling competitive cheerleading series, in Kissimmee.

Congratulations to the Matanzas squad, which advanced to the national tournament.

+ Matanzas sends 13 wrestlers to region meet
The Matanzas Pirates wrestling team wasn’t able to defend its District 5-1A title Feb. 2, despite hosting the tournament; however, 13 members of the Matanzas team will head to the Region 2-1A meet Friday, Feb. 11, in Lakeland.

As a team, the Pirates finished third overall, behind Lake Highland Prep and Bishop Moore.

Results of the Matanzas qualifiers include:

Alex White (103 pounds) — 2nd place
Joe Salcedo (112 pounds) — 3rd place
Pedro Nieves (119 pounds) — 3rd place
Sal Infante (125 pounds) — 2nd place
Zac Epps (130 pounds) — Champion

+ FPC sends nine wrestlers to region meet
The Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs wrestling team had seven wrestlers in their respective weight class finals in the District 2-3A tournament Saturday, Feb. 5, but only JZ Willliams managed to capture an individual district title.

FPC will send nine wrestlers to the Region 1-3A tournament Friday, Feb. 11, at Flagler Palm Coast.

Winter Springs won the team title with 239 team points, while FPC (166) took second place and DeLand (153) earned third place.

Williams (135 pounds) improved his season record to 38-3.

Results of the FPC qualifiers include:

Byron Lively — 112 pounds
Claudio Prazeras — 130 pounds
JZ Willliams — 135 pounds
Nick Michael — 140 pounds
Jimmy Gomes — 160 pounds
Rashad Cook — 171 pounds
Johnny Barrett — 189 pounds

+ Williams to play at Jacksonville University
Yeovanti Williams signed his National Letter of Intent Wednesday, Feb. 2, to play at Jacksonville University.

Williams finished his senior season at Flagler Palm Coast High School with 34 receptions for 476 yards and two touchdowns.He will play as a wide receiver at JU, under the instruction of coach Kerwin Bell, former Gator and NFL quarterback.

“Vanti is the kind of kid every coach dreams about having,” FPC coach Caesar Campana said. “He’s extremely athletic, cerebral and has a great attitude. He’s the epitome of being a student athlete.”

He hopes to play in the NFL one day.

“I want to put Bunnell on the map — be up there playing with Mardy (Gilyard),” Williams said.

+ Pearson signs with Truman State College
Aaron Pearson, a 5-foot-7 running back for Flagler Palm Coast, signed his National Letter of Intent to play college football at Truman State University, located in Kirksville, Mo.

Pearson played three seasons of varsity football for FPC and was named the team’s offensive MVP as a freshman.

+ High school athletics districts changed
The Florida High School Athletic Association announced Jan. 28 a new re-districting plan for the next two years.

There now will be eight classes based on school size, and the sports affected are football, baseball, softball, girls volleyball and boys and girls basketball.

Class 8A will be for the biggest schools (2,301 to 4,295 students in fall 2010 enrollment) down to 1A for the smallest schools (44 to 600).

Flagler Palm Coast will be placed in Class 8A, with FPC, DeLand and Spruce Creek in District 1-8A.

Matanzas will be in District 4-5A, and includes St. Augustine and Palatka.
