Joe and Dan Matuszczak raced at Flagler Palm Coast High School. They raced together at Stetson University. They’re active in the running community in the area, competing in 5Ks and other races.
But they’re hoping to add a twist, with a new company they’ve started, called Red Pointer Productions LLC. Their first event, scheduled for May 7, will the the Florida Running Obstacle Challenge, or FL-ROC.
“We put on fun, exciting races and events for people around Florida to enjoy,” Joe Matuszczak said. “We’re trying to branch away from the typical 5K.”
The FL-ROC, which will take place at Destination Daytona, will feature obstacles such as a 7-foot military wall and a row of tires to run through.
“We’ll have you going through mud, trudging through water and going on a giant slip-and-slide,” Matuszczak said. “It’s basically a military obstacle challenge course mixed in with some fun obstacles.”
In addition to the race, the Matuszczak brother see the event as party, as well. Free beer awaits at the finish line, as well as beach volleyball and live music.
“You would think exercise and free beer don’t correlate, but this type of event draws those types of people — runners and non-runners alike,” Matuszczak said.
The concept of a running obstacle challenge is catching on with other companies, such as Warrior Dash, and the Matuszczaks hope that will build interest in the FL-ROC, as well. They said people are signing up every day, and the word is spreading quickly.
To become one of the mud-splattered runners, visit www.FL-ROC.com. Entry fee is $50 for an individual, $225 for a team of five. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Flagler YMCA.
