The Flagler Playhouse will hold open auditions 6 p.m. Sunday, July 31, and Monday, Aug. 1, for its season-opening musical comedy “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is based on the book by Rachel Sheinkin, with music and lyrics by William Finn.

Directed by Judi Ernst, the musical tells a story of young people, played by adults, at a turning point in their lives, all at a spelling bee.

The play offers the opportunity for dual roles for actors, five male and four female, ages 18 to 50 and includes improvisation, fantasy vignettes, songs and audience participation.

Auditions will include music and cold readings from the show.

Rehearsals are set to begin Aug. 8, and the show opens Friday, Sept. 23, with nine performances at the Flagler Playhouse, 301 E. Moody Blvd., Bunnell.

Flagler Playhouse, Flagler’s only community theater, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching and entertaining the community through live theater.

Other performances set for the 2011-2012 season are “Steel Magnolias,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Nunsense,” “Over the River and Through the Woods” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”
