Flagler County’s Department of Juvenile Justice Community Garden Advisory Council was presented a 2011 Daily Point of Light Award.

The award honors individuals and groups creating meaningful change in communities across America.

“The Advisory Council's volunteer efforts honor the legacy of this award and demonstrate the power of service to create tangible change,” said Cheryl Massaro, director of the Flagler County Youth Center and Juvenile Justice Board.

Since the inception of the DJJ Community Garden two years ago, the purpose of all volunteers is to help feed Flagler’s hungry. Fresh garden vegetables and fruit are harvested seasonally and donated to local food pantries for distribution. Every year, the need for local social assistance has increased, and so has the production of the garden.

“Due to the success of this garden, many new community gardens have been sprouting up throughout the county with the same purpose in mind — helping to feed Flagler’s hungry,” Massaro said.

The garden has support from the Flagler County DJJ Council, the Flagler County Board of County Commissions and the Flagler County School Board.

“It truly does take a village to evoke positive change, as well as the commitment and vision of the garden's Advisory Council, keeping the garden headed on the right track,” said Massaro

Members of the Community Garden Advisory Council are as follows:
Elma Chung, master gardener
Johanna Davis, FFA, Flagler Palm Coast High School

Michelle Morrell, Flagler County Health Department
