FLAGLER BEACH — Eight-and-a-half-year-old Flagler Beach-based book publisher Ocean Publishing beat out more than 1,300 category entries to win the Benjamin Franklin Award for excellence in editorial and design, for its first installment in the Explore the National Marine Sanctuaries with Jean-Michel Cousteau series.
The award was presented at the 23rd-annual Benjamin Franklin Awards program conducted by the Independent Book Publishers Association, on May 23, in New York City.
On receiving the honor, Frank Gromling, founder and publisher, said, “To me, (the award) signals that Ocean Publishing is reaching the performance levels we had set for ourselves when we opened our doors.”
Jean-Michael Cousteau said, in a release, “This series is intended not only to inspire, but to inform the general public on specific measures that are working to preserve our ocean resources.”
Ocean Publishing produces nonfiction books on nature, marine life, environment and conservation. Its catalog contains 21 titles. The first "Explore … with Cousteau" book focuses on the southeast Sanctuary region — including the Florida Keys, Flower Garden Banks, Gulf of Mexico and Gray’s Reef.
