The list is a who’s who among area politicians and leaders, but it has nothing to do with Internet cafés, manatee zones or sea walls. Instead, the list features items such as a trip on the Intracoastal Waterway, including wine and cheese (Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts), a large coquina rock deliverd to your home (Cline Construction President Sam Cline) and a mud-bogging and skeet-shooting outing (Bunnell Vice Mayor Jenny Crain-Brady).
County Commissioner Barbara Revels, who is also the president of the George Washington Carver Foundation, is leading the way to raise money for the Carver Center, a proposed renovation of Carver Gym, on Drain Street, Bunnell. Rather than raising funds through a silent auction, Revels decided to try for a virtual auction, similar to Ebay, to encourage communitywide participation.
“We have had some fabulous response,” Revels said. By the time the bidding ends (by email, preferably), she hopes to have raised $5,000. That will add to the $1,000 recently raised by Cheryl Massaro and the Spotlight on Flagler Youth Talent Show.
The coquina stone is one of the top items, with a half-dozen people placing bids. Cline said he hasn’t yet picked out the stone from the quarry at Arrow Materials, but he expects it will end up being about half the size of a car.
Revels said the funds raised for the center will help it to become not just a gym for playing, but a true community center in Bunnell, with classes offered to adults and activities for young children. A group of young people will be enlisted to govern the Carver Center, too, Revels said.
