While growing up and playing a lot of youth sports, I learned a lot about giving back to the community.
Playing a sport isn’t just about being a winner or a loser; it’s about working together as a team and trying to obtain a common goal. Sometimes that goal is winning a tournament. Other times, that goal is helping someone out.
Flagler Future is all about giving back to the Flagler County community.
The Flagler Future program was created to help youth who are interested in playing basketball acquire more determination and drive in the sport.
Coach Corey Hodges said the vision of the program was to foster a competitive environment to prepare players for high school basketball.
He said community support is key in the positive development of the youth in the county.
Hodges said the intention is to nurture the person as a basketball player, but to also assist in the development as a person.
“By this, we mean strong, positive, ambitious, independent, critical thinking and hardworking individuals,” Hodges said.
Right now, the Flagler Future program has one girls team, a U13 competitive traveling team and features four coaches: Hodges, Jimmy Gonzalez Jr., Jessica DiMaria and Theresa Thomas.
Recently, the group of girls went out to four of the Palm Coast fire stations and delivered bottled water.
“We want to teach our players about giving back to the community,” Hodges said.
Earlier this month, on June 18, the team delivered clothes and supplies to the S.T.U.F.F. BUS in front of Walmart — again, in an effort to teach the girls the importance of giving back.
“When you invest in the person, the player will develop,” Hodges said.
