The Matanzas Lady Pirates tennis team is led by coach John White, who returns as coach from four years ago.
The Matanzas Lady Pirates tennis team has started the season 2-3, but coach John White said things will continue to improve as his team sees the latter part of its schedule.
“Our schedule is loaded in the front,” White said, noting his team has already played Nease and Ponte Vedra, two of the district’s toughest teams.
White expects the team to improve as the season goes on and also hopes his team’s depth will pay dividends later on.
The team is led by sophomore Stephanie Boettcher, a returning varsity player. Boettcher and Kelly Flanagan — the team’s No. 3 player — pair up for No. 1 doubles. Flanagan is a senior this season.
Rebekah Lam (No. 2 player) and Brittany Haney (No. 4) pair up as No. 2 doubles. Lam is a junior, and Haney is a sophomore.
“This season’s team has solid, consistent players from top to bottom,” White said. “There isn’t a big gap between the No. 1 and No. 5 player.”
White previously coached the girls tennis team four years ago, so he’s no stranger to the court.
He said as the season goes on, he will focus on strategy a lot more with his players.
“Every girl has already made big improvements in their skill level,” White said. “Their technique is only going to improve.”
