+ Iron Pirates begin weightlifting 1-0
The Matanzas Iron Pirates weightlifting began its season Wednesday, Feb. 23, at home against Class 2A state powerhouse St. Augustine and district foe Pedro Menendez.
St. Augustine won the meet with 51 team points; Matanzas (38) took second place and Pedro Menendez (21) took third.
Individual results include Cody Weaver (first place, 119 pounds); Matt Whalen (first place, 139); Christian Benvenuto (first place, 199); and Joel Manning (first place, 219). Benvenuto also set a personal record with a 500-pound total.
+ FPC weightlifters power to first win
The Flagler Palm Coast weightlifting team began its season Wednesday, Feb. 23, against Seabreeze. The Bulldogs won the meet, 56-34.

+ Accel Sports claims national championship
Six weightlifters from Accel Sports traveled the weekend of Feb. 25 to Feb. 27, to Houston, where they competed in the USA Weightlifting National Junior Championships.
Four of the lifters are current or past students at Matanzas High School, and the team is led by assistant coach Joey Lippo, also a football coach at Matanzas.
Accel Sports defended its national championship, grabbing 37 team points and beating out Team Houston (35) and Team Georgia (33).
The current Matanzas lifters who lift for Accel Sports are Matt Whalen, Anthony DeSantoli and Peter Corey. Tim Scott, who graduated, also lifts.
+ Lady Pirates beat St. Augustine softball
The Matanzas High School softball team defeated St. Augustine, 1-0, Monday, Feb. 28.
The Lady Pirates (4-6) did their damage in the first inning, with Ashley Pelose hitting a triple and then Marisa Magnuson bringing Pelose in on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Matanzas had three hits and two errors while St. Augustine had five hits and two errors.
Christina Reynolds (pitcher) and Gabrielle Prickett were the winning battery.
The Lady Pirates then lost to Creekside, 5-4,Tuesday, March 1.
+ Tennis Center offers youth clinic
Young tennis enthusiasts, ages 6 to 12, can join a free instructional clinic on Friday, March 4, to learn and practice basic tennis skills and strategies.
The Palm Coast Tennis Center will host a free youth tennis night with clinics scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The tennis center is located at 1290 Belle Terre Parkway.

+ Roller hockey, ball hock in action
Roller hockey Feb. 24:
The Red Wings took the regular-season championship.
In this week’s early game, the Rangers defeated the Whalers, 3-2, behind goaltender Ryan Garside. Corey Sherman buried the game winner in the third period.
The late game had the Red Wings take down the Predators, 7-4. Roman Makarov led the way for the Wings with three goals and two assists. Danny McIntyre scored three goals for the Predators.
This was the last week of the regular season.
The semifinals began Wednesday, March 2.
Game 1 was the Rangers against the Whalers. Game 2 featured the Red Wings vs. the Predators.
