The Flagler Palm Coast boys weightlifting team took fourth place in the Wednesday, March 16, 5-Star Conference meet, and also qualified sixth lifters for the March 30 sectional meet, which will take place at FPC. Wednesday’s meet was a dual-purpose meet, coach Robert Paxia said, and was also the District 3-2A qualifier.
The Bulldogs finished behind New Smyrna Beach (first), Spruce Creek (second) and DeLand (third). Unlimited class lifter Derron Green was the only Bulldog to take first place in the 5-Star Conference.
Princeton Macon broke the school bench record with 245 pounds and the total weight for the 139-pound class, but still didn’t make it out of the section. That’s proof that this is a difficult section, Paxia said.
“It’s a heart-breaker because Princeton was one of the guys we were thinking could score points for us at state,” Paxia said, adding the area is “stacked” in the 139-pound class.
Paxia said his team has seen success this year, but he was disappointed it ended prematurely for some of the “backbone” seniors.
“The team is progressing nicely,” Paxia said. “Overall, this season has been a huge success, as nearly every lifter has made huge increases in their totals and in the confidence department — which, in weightlifting, is half the battle.
“On a positive note, we ended up with six guys who have two more weeks to train their butts off so they can qualify for state,” Paxia said.
