+ Lady Pirates lose to Ponte Vedra, beat Nease
The Matanzas girls lacrosse team lost to Ponte Vedre 15-6, then beat Nease, 18-8, last week. The Lady Pirates are 3-5.

Standout players are sophomores Stephanie Gimenez (35 goals and 15 assists) and Alex Normandin (18 goals and eight assists). The defense is led by senior co-captains Taylor Miceli and Gabby Ceballos. Freshman Stephanie Stuart has excelled in the goal, coach Bill Hanrahan said.

+ Mitchell benches 335 pounds, lifts FPC to fourth
The Flagler Palm Coast boys weightlifting team took fourth place in the Wednesday, March 16, 5-Star Conference meet, and also qualified sixth lifters for the March 30 sectional meet, which will take place at FPC. Wednesday’s meet was a dual-purpose meet, coach Robert Paxia said, and was also the District 3-2A qualifier.

The Bulldogs finished behind New Smyrna Beach (first), Spruce Creek (second) and DeLand (third). Unlimited class lifter Derron Green was the only Bulldog to take first place in the 5-Star Conference.

Princeton Macon broke the school bench record with 245 pounds and the total weight for the 139-pound class, but still didn’t make it out of the section. That’s proof this is a difficult section, Paxia said.

“It’s a heart-breaker,” Paxia said.

Paxia said his team has seen success this year, but he was disappointed it ended prematurely for some of the “backbone” seniors.

“The team is progressing nicely,” Paxia said. “Overall, this season has been a huge success, as nearly every lifter has made huge increases in their totals and in the confidence department — which, in weightlifting, is half the battle.

“On a positive note, we ended up with six guys who have two more weeks to train their butts off so they can qualify for state,” Paxia said.

169-pound weight class:
Aaron Pearson (Second in conference) — 295/235/530
