Indian Trails Middle School Future and Community Problem Solving students put their brains to work when they traveled to the state competition in Cape Canaveral.
During the writing component of the competition, students relied on critical and creative problem-solving skills practiced throughout the school year to address global issues in a futuristic setting.
Students also participated in Community Problem Solving, a component of Future Problem Solvers that encourages students to identify and solve problems in their own communities using a six-step process to solve problems.
The process is summarized by teams in a written report, display board and scrapbook. Students communicate the implementation of their action plans during a Community Problem Solvers showcase and a 30-minute interview with state evaluators.
The Indian Trails service-learning class took home all three middle-school awards for its yearlong community service projects which focused on bully prevention, sustainable living and disaster preparedness.
The state champions are invited to the international competition June 9 to June 12, at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where they will compete globally against Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia and Singapore.
