Seniors from both Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast High Schools raked in the dough Tuesday, May 3, at the Flagler County Education Foundation's 25th-annual Senior Scholarship Ceremony.
The foundation awarded 239 scholarships, totaling $240,000.
“The Senior Scholarship Ceremony, in my opinion, is such a wonderful event; when it’s all over with, to sit back and realize how this community gives, even the last couple years with the economic downturn was at it worst,” said Nicole Brose, executive director of the Flagler County Education Foundation. “It's all inspiration that we are able to leverage that kind of support from a community that has had its struggles.”
The Florida Lottery and the Flagler/Palm Coast Kiwanis Club sponsored this year’s event.
The Flagler/Palm Coast Kiwanis Club, which has sponsored the event every year since its inception, handed out a total of $28,000 in scholarships, the largest amount given by any one organization.
Brose said she hopes that after college, some of these scholarship winners return to work in this community.
“Those are the kids that did a little over what is required,” Brose said of the scholarship applicants. “These are the kids that took time to write essays, create resumes, go on interviews, meet with groups and really put themselves out there.”
Brose, who has been organizing this event for the last three years, hopes to grow the event more and more each year. The foundation is looking for any individual businesses, churches or civic groups that are interested in giving to the future of the community.
“For me, when I reflect on that night I just think ‘Wow, what a great community,'” Brose added.
