When FC United and Ancient City Soccer merged in 2009, the goal was to create clubs that could compete at the highest level.
Two years later, the U17 boys team is headed to the Final Four in the Florida Youth Soccer Association’s State Cup tournament, the tournament that will determine the U17 Florida champion.
The FC United U17 boys team, coached by Micah Clukey, comprises players from 10 high schools, including two players from Flagler County.
Nico Medina, of Flagler Palm Coast, and T.J. Von Diezelski, of Matanzas High School, both play for the club team, which trains in Palm Coast and St. Augustine.
FC United made it through the first round, the second round and the Sweet 16 with a combined 6-2 record.
In the first round of the Final Four, FC United will play Florida Rush, the No. 2-ranked team in the state, according to Clukey.
Clukey said his team was ranked No. 25 coming into the spring season but likely has jumped with its State Cup run. FC United lost to Rush last year, 2-0, with both goals scored in the remaining 20 minutes.
Clukey said his team has a shot at winning the state title, but it will have to play fundamentally sound just to get to the finals.
“It’s exciting for our area,” Clukey said. “The merger has been good, and it has brought more talent to the club.”
The semifinals will be held May 20, at the Florida Youth Soccer Association Complex, in Auburndale.
