When St. Louis Rams wide receiver Mardy Gilyard arrived May 21 at the All Out Field Day, he was thinking about one thing: How much fun the water guns he brought were going to be.
The event, held at Carver Gym, in Bunnell, was the first major event put on by the Gilyard Group Foundation.
“I wanted the kids to come out and have a ball — parents to be kids with their kids, Mardy to be a big kid with the kids,” Gilyard said. “I just wanted everybody to come out and enjoy themselves — have something that they can come out and do and be excited about every year.”
The event featured an impromptu water gun fight, a basketball tournament, a magic show and old-school field day events.
Michael Kettman, Guinness Book of World Records record holder for most basketballs spun at a time, also made an afternoon apperance.
“I’m just blessed that I am able to have this impact on my community to where everybody will come out here,” Gilyard said.
The foundation plans to make the field day an annual event, and Gilyard has special plans for next year: an attempt at the world’s longest Slip ’n’ Slide.
