More than 300 surfers participated in the 12th-annual Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic, Nov. 12 and Nov. 13, in Flagler Beach. Spectators cheered on the surfers from the beach and the boardwalk.
“This year’s contest went fantastic,” said Will Tant. “It’s everything we hoped for. The weather turned out well; the waves were great. It was probably the biggest crowd we’ve ever had.”
The contest, which celebrates the life of Tant’s brother, Tommy, who died in 1998 from an aortic aneurysm, has grown the past 12 years from a one-day contest, with 50 surfers, to a two-day contest, including a Red Bull Night Riders event, a food festival and concert.
What made this year unique for Tant was seeing his father, Tom, surf the contest for the first time.
“Seeing him put on a jersey and paddle out in a contest in memory of Tommy was just really, really special,” Will Tant said.
There were a few new additions to this year’s event, including the presenting sponsor, Nautica, and the incorporation of the National Marfan Foundation.
“It’s a critical component that we’ve always wanted to have,” Will Tant said of the foundation. “And since my mom and I were diagnosed, they’ve given us support through the diagnosis process and also through the event.”
Tant hopes that the foundation will continue to be part of the event each year and bring awareness to Marfan syndrome, a disorder of the connective tissue found in the heart, blood vessels, bones, joints and eyes.
