The competition came down to the wire. But after the final cents were counted for Team Feed Flagler’s cash collection drive, Sheriff Don Fleming and his team were named the victors, beating out last year’s champion, Flagler County Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston.

Fleming raised $9,100 and. Johnston came in with $8,096.60. Last year, Johnston won Feed Flagler’s moving trophy by collecting $3,400.

“We worked so hard we couldn’t do anymore than we did,” Johnson said. “A lot of our donations came in one and two dollars at a time. It is fun and the food banks will benefit from our efforts.”

The two fundraisers bring the total donations to a whopping $25,045, which is about $10,000 more than last year’s total. With expenses for today’s free Community Thanksgiving Celebration meal estimated at $11,000, that leaves around $14,000 to be presented to local food banks for the holiday season.

“I really can’t thank everyone that contributed enough,” Flagler County Commissioner Milissa Holland said. “This will have a significant impact on the food banks. I can’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate the sharing of Thanksgiving.”

Both the food donations and monetary donations were hotly contested battles with elected officials and civic groups. Chicks With Cans, a United Way team, recaptured the traveling trophy again this year for food donations (CLICK HERE for the story).

Feed Flagler’s free Thanksgiving meal will be held today, 3 to 6 p.m., at 11 locations (CLICK HERE for the locations).
