Students in Stephanie Waldner’s second-grade class at Belle Terre Elementary School traveled back in time, Friday, Nov. 18, to rediscover the history of Thanksgiving.

The students performed a play, “It’s Thanksgiving,” written by their teacher. Parents visited the classroom for the world premiere.

The play told the story of a little boy who has forgotten what Thanksgiving is.

“Isn’t it all about food and football,” the main character, played by Kaden Kroul, says in the play.

The boy rediscovers the meaning of the holiday through a dream, in which he finds himself aboard the Mayflower and present at the first Thanksgiving.

“I think it’s just a more interesting way to learn the material,” Waldner said about the project. “Especially in social studies, I like to add projects to our units just so they remember it. It sticks with them when they do it this way instead of just reading it out of a book.”
