The Matanzas Pirates wrestling team won four out of five duals Nov. 19 in the 6th-annual tourney.
The Matanzas Pirates wrestling team opened its season Saturday, Nov. 19, in the 6th-annual Matanzas Duals.
The Pirates wrestled five separate duals, winning four and tying the final matchup, taking first place. Throughout the one-day tournament, Matanzas defeated Ponte Vedra, Nease, Satellite and Orange Park. The Pirates tied Creekside.
Matanzas assistant coach Tyler Hurry said opening the season with five duals helps the team see its strengths and weaknesses.
“It lets us know immediately what and where we need to work on,” Hurry said.
Initial reaction from Hurry was the strong showing of the upper weights — the 160-pound class up to the heavyweight class. Five of the six weight classes went undefeated.
Marquese Jones went undefeated in the 160-pound class; Ryan Sanchez went undefeated in the 170-pound class. In the 182-pounders, Jason Cowles and Carmine Pronesti combined for five pins. Tony Mendez had five pins and went undefeated in the 220-pound class. In the 285-pound class, Steven Moseley and Joe Murtagh went undefeated and combined for five pins.
Despite the success, Hurry and the Pirates wrestling team know it’s a long season.
“This was just one of the steps in our big plan,” Hurry said. “And that’s to get guys to Lakeland for the state tournament.”
