It’s been almost two years since The Art and Soul Studio owner Erin Walker got the idea to bring paint-your-own pottery to Palm Coast.
In January, after teaching high school for three-and-a-half years, Walker was at a point in her career when she knew she could no longer teach.
“My problem is there is so much emphasis on drilling information that you miss out on the relationship aspect of it,” Walker said. “I really want to impact the kids, but I wanted to do something for them outside the system.”
After doing some soul searching, including fasting at her church, Walker knew that it was time to move forward.
A year later, The Art and Soul Studio, 25 Pine Cone Drive, Unit 3B, will celebrate its grand opening Friday, Oct. 7, through Sunday, Oct. 9.
“I have this really weird love for Palm Coast,” Walker said. “It might sound kind of corny, but I want (the studio) to be soul-changing — that’s where the name comes from — whether it’s a mended relationship that has happened here or spending time by yourself, or family spending time together.”
The studio’s main attraction is paint-your-own pottery, but it also offers glass fusion, including making jewelry, ornaments and bowls. Looking long term, Walker hopes to have family events along with classes to promote self-esteem, and classes with other art media.
On the books now is Wined Down Wednesdays, a ladies night for adults only, when women can paint pottery and bring wine for themselves and friends.
But most importantly to Walker is giving back to the community. Her vision is to give to a different cause each month, starting with breast cancer research, in honor of her mother, Carol Walker, a breast cancer survivor.
