+ Four golfers named to Grand Club Hall of Fame
Four area golfers have been elected to the Hall of Fame by the Grand Club, with induction to take place Friday, Nov. 4, at the Pine Course.

Receiving the high honor are Marcia Hayton, Bob Ross, Toni Loretti and Bob Seiling.

All four were selected for their contributions to the game of golf and the area.

These four join Bob Schultz, Harry Davis, Jerry Edwards, Deb Crowley, Helen Perlman and Ginny Nicewonger, who were initial Hall of Fame inductees in 2010.

The celebration will begin 5:30 p.m., in Arnie’s Grill.

Last year’s Hall of Fame event sold out in three days, and many more had to be turned away.

For reservations, contact Dora Garcia, at 445-9500.

Contributing Writer Jock MacKenzie will serve as master of ceremonies.

+ Lotto Invitational visits Indian Trails Sports Complex
Seventy-eight soccer teams from all over Florida will inundate Palm Coast this weekend.

The 2011 Lotto Invitational Cup, hosted by FC United, will be Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9, at Indian Trails Sports Complex.

“We partnered with Lotto two years and were only able to attract 36 teams in our first year,” said Reg Monsanto, president of FC United.

In addition to doubling the number of teams, this year’s tournament will also focus on breast-cancer awareness.

“With many of us having lost loved ones to cancer, and with so many survivors among our membership, we thought it only appropriate to help support this wonderful cause by wearing pink,” Monsanto said.

All FC United teams, ages U9 through U18, will don pink uniforms Sunday, Oct. 9, the last day of the tournament.

“For soccer geeks, our world is soccer, but this month we must realize that life is more than that,” Monsanto said.

+ Vasconcellos named Senior of the Month
Flagler Palm Coast High School swimmer Carolyne Vasconcellos was honored as the Rotary Student-Athlete of the Month, for September.

Vasconcellos also competes on the Flagler County Synchro Belles, the synchronized-swimming team that has won several state and national awards.

Vasconcellos was part of the trio event that won a national championship in July.

+ Lady Bulldogs softball earns academic recognition
High school athletes are called student-athletes for a reason. If they don’t maintain a certain GPA, they aren’t allowed to compete.

But the Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs softball team goes way beyond just meeting the minimum threshold.

The Lady Bulldogs were recognized last week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association after maintaining the ninth-best cumulative GPA for high-school programs in the United States.

The Lady Bulldogs had a team-weighted GPA of 3.938 for the 2010-2011 school year.
