A group of volunteers took shelter under the cover of the bathrooms Saturday, Oct. 8, at Town Center as Patricia Moody sang “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” from the Disney classic, “Cinderella.”

Moody, the grand marshal for the local Buddy Walk, signed the song in American Sign Language as her voice cut through the rain.

The sixth-annual Buddy Walk was canceled due to heavy winds Saturday morning, but despite not being able to actually walk, the Fun Coast Down Syndrome Association reached its financial goal of raising $20,000. This is the first year the local walk has surpassed its goal.

“We were determined to do it,” said Paula Wilburn, founder of Fun Coast Down Syndrome Association. “But the wind — it tore everything down. It got to where it wasn’t safe to have any volunteers out there.”

The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

The local walk will not be rescheduled because of the associated cost.
