+ Heritage Academy raises funds for first-grader
Heritage Academy hosted a car wash for first-grader Jojo Erdman, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia.
“We are a small community at Heritage,” said Cindy Erickson, dean of students. “Everyone in our school family knows Jojo and his mother, Angel, and we wanted to do something to show support for them.”
The spirit of giving was also demonstrated by the local community.
Kevin Williams, whose daughter, Desire, attends Heritage, heard about the situation and brought it to the attention of two local motorcycle clubs. “We believe in giving back to the community,” Williams said.
Members of Destiny’s Disciples of Bunnell and The Warrior Brotherhood of Palm Coast each contributed to the cause. Both clubs are local chapters of national organizations.
To donate to Erdman’s cause, visit Heritage Academy, 201 W. Moody Blvd., Bunnell, or call 586-7500.
+ Author Debbie Dadey visits Bunnell third-graders via Skype
Students in Christina Kennelly’s third-grade class at Bunnell Elementary had a Skype visit with children’s author Debbie Dadey.
Dadey, author of “Bailey School Kids Mysteries,” talked with the children about her books and how she writes. She also took questions from the students.
The school purchased a copy of one Dadey book for each child in Kennelly’s class.
+ Art teacher raises funds
Monica James, art teacher at Flagler Palm Coast High School, is raising money to make her class a 21st century art room, on Donorschoose.com.
James hopes to purchase digital cameras and memory cards to create demonstration videos for drawing techniques.
“My classroom is full of students from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life,” James writes on her Donors Choose page. “I have students that have access to technology and unlimited resources at home and students who are homeless. I would like to bridge that gap and level the playing field in my classroom by providing all of the equipment that they need to create their presentations.”
The cameras purchased would also be used to photograph finished work for portfolios.
“I truly believe that the classroom should bridge the gap between the haves and have-nots and level the playing field for children from all backgrounds,” James said. “It is important that students today learn to use technology in productive ways and move beyond being passive consumers.”
