The Matanzas Pirates will attempt to get their first win this season 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Florida Air Academy.
The Matanzas Pirates football team had four turnovers in its Sept. 2 game against Flagler Palm Coast High School. If the Pirates want to notch their first win of the 2011 season Sept. 9 against Florida Air Academy, coach Keith Lagocki and his players must clean up the mistakes.
Melbourne-based Florida Air Academy went 4-6 last season, according to www.MaxPreps.com. The Falcons run the pistol on offense, in which the quarterback is lined up a few yards behind the center, and then the running back is an additional few yards behind the QB.
This will be the first matchup between the Falcons (Class 2-A) and the Pirates (Class 5-A).
Lagocki said because it’s a private, military boarding school, the team spends a lot of time together. Nevertheless, Lagocki and the Pirates (0-1) didn’t make any drastic changes in practice this week.
“We are business as usual,” Lagocki said Tuesday night. He had the team practice Monday despite the Labor Day holiday. He wants his team to continue to avoid penalties and clean up the turnovers.
“We’re very pleased with the effort, and we just know that we can’t continue to turn the ball over week in and week out and expect to win games,” he said.
The Pirates had four fumbles — three lost — and an interception in the season opener against FPC.
Two of the fumbles turned into FPC touchdowns — a huge momentum-breaker and changing point in the game, Lagocki said.
Lagocki said his team managed to avoid any notable injuries. He did say the team was disappointed with the loss to FPC, but the players know their focus is now on Florida Air Academy.
“We were upset because we know that it was an opportunity that slipped away to beat them,” Lagocki added.
In the FPC game, the Pirates ran 60 plays on offense but were only penalized four times.
“We did a lot better there,” Lagocki said. “We made improvements (in practice) in the blocking that we got called on ... and we’ll continue to work on that.”
