From martial arts to the art of making pizza, from a study on forest health to the challenge of eating marshmallows out of pudding without using any hands, the activities in the Flagler County Amazing Race proved a fun way to spend the summer.

Mindy Hoffmann always plans a series of activities for her own children to do during the summer, and this year, she invited several other families to join them. As many as 40 participated in each event. The theme was based on the TV show, “The Amazing Race.”

“Each week, each family received a clue sent by email disclosing the upcoming destination,” said Hoffmann, who home schools her children. “Sometimes, the clues were simple, but other times it took a little research.”

The kids visited historical sites such as Mala Compra, Fort Matanzas, Princess Place Preserve and Washington Oaks. They learned how to sing “Happy Birthday” in Spanish at the Latino Market and how to measure the diamater of a pizza behind the counter at Domino’s. They learned some beginner moves at Life Martial Arts.

“Some families came and left, we made some new friends, and others held on through the whole race,” Hoffmann said. She said the participants enjoyed it so much she has decided to hold an event each month during the school year.
