City Repertory Theatre, Palm Coast’s newest theater, will hit the stage with its grand opening show, “The Laramie Project,” 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Hollingsworth Gallery.

Diane Ellertsen and John Sbordone, who previously were part of the Flagler Playhouse, created the new theater.

“Unlike what you might expect at a typical local theater, The City Rep is dedicated to producing plays that provoke the mind and spirit,” Sbordone said. “It’s a theater that will provide excellent opportunities for serious actors to pursue their art. We want to explore new ideas in the community and create a forum for discussion.”

The premiere of “The Laramie Project” examines the tragedy of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard’s torture and death from the perspective of the residents of Laramie, Wyo. The play, based on hundreds of interviews, portrays the town and how its people come alive as they cope with the brutal crime perpetrated by two of its own young citizens.

“The compelling premise makes for great theater, for it touches all of us and our ideas about homosexuality, sexual politics, education and the differences between tolerance and acceptance,” Sbordone said. “The play is absolutely riveting and has won awards all over the country.”

The cast includes Robert O. Dimsey, Robert Gill, Bobbi Fouts, Anna Meade, Jonathan Haglund, Bruce Popielarski, Angela Andress, John Birney and Leana Gardella.

“The Laramie Project” will take the stage 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, through Saturday, Sept. 17, and Thursday, Sept. 22, through Saturday, Sept. 24, at Hollingsworth Gallery, 160 Cypress Point Parkway. Ticket prices are $15 on Thursdays and $20 for Friday and Saturday. Call 585-9415.
