On warm and pleasant fall mornings, area golfers will put a little shine on their clubs and gear up their games for special tournament action from one end of Palm Coast to the other.
Grand Reserve got it going with its club championship, a two-week event that is off and running.
John Metz took the lead with an opening round of 72 (one over par) with another 18 holes to be played. Bruce Hammock is right on his heels after shooting a 72, though his handicap knocked him to a 66 and into the net division, where he leads the field.
One more event that deserves a lot of golf attention is the annual battle between Grand Haven and Pine Course. It takes place Sept. 24-25, with the first round at the Pine Course.
The two sides are determined to put the valued title in their back pockets, but Grand Haven members seemingly have the edge. The Pine does have Harry Davis, though.
If Rick McArdle and Lou Paolucci are on the Grand Haven roster, wresting the title is going to be an exceptionally tough chore. Keep in mind these two co-own the course record of 63.
I don’t know Paolucci personally, but I do know McArdle, who volunteers his golf skills as an assistant coach at Matanzas High School.
If I was a high-school student and an avid golver, I would join the team just to soak up McArdle’s golf knowledge.
Another upcoming special event is the men’s and ladies’ member-guest Oct. 21-22, at the Pine Course.
This is a 36-hole match in which members play with invited guests at the Pine and Cypress courses.
Here and there
I have long admired Bill Nelson as a friend and good golfer at The Pine Course. What I didn’t know is that he and his Blues-Dixieland Band are stars from here to DeLand.
They performed at a recent Pine dinner function and packed the house. Word has now spread that they will be back again.
If you have a future function, I strongly recommend Bill Nelson and The Jazz Tradition. You can reach Nelson by calling 445-0259.
Last, a thought to remember: “It’s not what you accomplish in life, it’s what you overcome.”
I assume that also applies to my lousy putting stroke.
