Flagler County dedicated its newest park the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 105 Briarwood Path, off State Road 100.
Moody Homestead County Park was once part of the homestead of Flagler County’s founding father, Isaac I. Moody, and his brother, Robert Moody.
I. I. Moody, as he was known, was part of the delegation that approached the state about the creation of Flagler County, in 1917. He also was appointed as the county’s first state representative.
“It is fitting that something of significance be named in honor of the original Moody family — the three brothers that had so much to do with the development of Flagler County,” said Diane Marquis, who lived and raised her family on the homestead. “And what better spot than this beautiful piece of land to be turned into a passive park?”
The Moody Homestead was scheduled for commercial development, in 2007. However, members of the Moody family and Flagler County historians approached the county commission with a plea to purchase the oak-filled grove.
After being placed on the list of sensitive areas, the Land Acquisition Committee was able to purchase the land in 2008 for $950,000, with funds from a special tax that had been approved by Flagler County voters.
“This property was a bit of a challenge for us,” said Tim Telfer, Flagler County environmental planner. “It took quite a period of time, almost nine months, to come to fruition and strike a deal on it.”
Telfer said the land could have been turned into either an indoor gun range or a strip-mall office facility.
