One coastal-cleanup volunteer who walked along Malacompra Beach Saturday, Sept. 17, found a tiny doll arm sticking out of the sand. The Barbie doll was uncovered and was recognized as one of the oddest finds during the International Coastal Cleanup, which took place locally at Malacompra Beach, Flagler Beach and Marineland.
In addition to the common trash items of cigarette butts, straws and bottle caps, another cleanup volunteer found a Communion cup under the Flagler Beach Pier.
Students from Matanzas High School, who helped clean Marineland, turned the morning into a science lesson by making a display of all their collected trash to demonstrate a timeline of biodegradation of materials found.
“Many volunteers said the beaches were already clean,” said Sallie O’Hara, program administrator for Friends of A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway. “I think (that) attests to the fact that we are vigilant about cleaning throughout the year. We take pride, and we have folks that go out and clean things up.”
Friends of A1A are looking for people to adopt beaches around the county to ensure that they are cleaned more than once a year. If interested in adopting a beach, call 904-425-8055.
