+ Tennis: Petrillo, Hoke win districts
Nick Petrillo and Adam Hoke, of the Matanzas boys tennis team, won the district championship in their respective ranks.
Petrillo won the No. 1 singles championship in two straight sets, 7-5 and 6-0.
Hoke won No. 2 singles also in two sets, 6-2 and 6-1.
Both advance to the Class 3A state tournament, which will take place April 17 through April 20.
Petrillo and Hoke also won the No. 1 doubles district championship, 6-2 and 6-0, to advance to the state tournament.
+ Acierno wins districts, advances
Emily Acierno, the No. 1 Flagler Palm Coast girls tennis player, advanced to the state tournament after winning the district tournament Thursday as the No. 2 seed.
The state meet will take place April 16 to April 20, in Orlando.
+ Matanzas softball to play for conference title
While many players were relaxing on Spring Break, the players on the Matanzas girls softball team were busy making it five wins in a row. The Lady Pirates defeated Palatka, 4-3, Tuesday night in a nine-inning game.
With the win, Matanzas (11-10) will play Creekside Tuesday, April 10, for the St. Johns River Athletic Conference championship.
Gabrielle Prickett (2-0) was on the mound Tuesday for the first time since February and was effective for the Lady Pirates, tallying 121 pitches, of which 78 were strikes. She threw 27 first-pitch strikes. In nine innings, Prickett had five strikeouts and one walk.
Cheyenna Espinoza went 1-for-4 with a single and one RBI. Ashley Pelose went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Amanda Morea went 1-for-2.
This was the first time in school history Matanzas has beaten Palatka in regular season play. Coach Sara Novak said the team showed a lot of heart and will to win the game, especially after being down by two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
+ Lady Bulldogs top Paxon in softball
Flagler Palm Coast (18-4) defeated Paxon, 3-0, Wednesday night.
Sophomore Morgan Lambert won her 18th game of the season on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs.
Sam Mittel went 1-for-2, Lee Ann Spivey went 3-for-4 with a double and Mariah Oberbeck went 2-for-3.
+ FPC baseball competes in Hall of Fame tournament
The Flagler Palm Coast baseball team went 1-2 in the Hall of Fame tournament.
The Bulldogs lost to a team from Illiana, Ill., 6-4; beat Coral Springs Christian, 3-2; and lost to T.C. Williams, of Virginia, 7-4.
With the three games played, FPC is 9-10.
Travis Cochran went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the loss in the first game of the tournament.
