The Flagler Surf Series is an idea that local pro bodyboarder Dan Worley has been bouncing around for a couple years now. His vision became a reality Sunday, April 8, with the first Flagler Surf Series event.
While he was in high school, Worley was part of the DECA group that started the Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Contest, and with the success and growth of that competition, the idea was to bring a less mainstream event back to Flagler Beach.
“It’s time for this professional bodyboarder to give back to the community that has given me so much and shaped me into the man that I have always wanted to be,” Worley said.
Although strong northeast winds prevented surfing Friday and Saturday, the waters cleared up Sunday for the contest that included a Retro Circa ’70s Division, which featured classic board shapes.
Keeping this a locals-only contest, Finn’s Beachside Pub was the presenting sponsor and fully backed the financials for the Pro Division. Other supporters were Safe Exit LLC, Sully’s Surf Shop and Clever Surfboards.
“I hope with the success of this first event to bring events 2 and 3 to life by the end of the year,” Worley said.
The next Flagler Surf Series event is tentatively scheduled near the Fourth of July.
