The Matanzas High School spring musical, “Once on This Island,” will open 7 p.m. Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14, at the Pirate Theater.

“Once on This Island” is the story of a peasant girl who falls in love with a grand homme. Set in the Antilles, the gods of love, water, life and death make appearances, and, eventually, the story demonstrates how a peasant girl proves the power of love could bring together the people of the island.

For Director Dave Pandich, this is a show he has wanted to put on since he first saw it 10 years ago.

“I knew it would be the kind of project everybody could get together on,” he said, sitting in a dark theater, as the cast warmed up for dress rehearsal. “The reason this performance is so cool is it’s the first time that almost all elements of the Performing Arts Department have collaborated.”

Teachers Anna Frato, David Moden and Jeanna Reiter have all brought their expertise to the performance through music and choreography.

Even math teacher Eric Kassebaum got involved with the set design.

“This was a dream project for me, and seeing it come together is pretty awesome,” Pandich said.

Tickets for the shows are $5. There will also be an open dress rehearsal 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12, with a suggested donation of a nonperishable food item to be donated to Flagler Habitat For Humanity.
