+ Matanzas Iron Pirates finish third in state
The Matanzas High School weightlifting team finished in third place Friday, April 20, at the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Class 1A state meet, in Kissimmee.

Matanzas finished its regular season undefeated and took second place in the conference. At the state meet, the Iron Pirates scored 21 team points, the most the team has scored at a state meet, according to coach Keith Lagocki.

Individual results are as follows:

119 pounds: Richard McCune, DNP
129: Chris Santana, 2nd
139: Matt Whalen, 2nd
154: Casey Kronemeyer, 4th
169: Les Allen, DNP
183: Watson Stevens, DNP
219: Joel Manning, 3rd
238: Shawn White, 3rd

“These guys did an awesome job and all the credit goes to them, their hard work and dedication,” Lagocki said, adding that fellow coaches Joey Lippo and Jesse Reynolds played a large role in the team’s success.

This season marks the second time in three years that Matanzas has finished third in the state.

+ Lady Pirates to host Oak Hall in state playoffs
Fresh off the district championship in girls lacrosse, the Matanzas Lady Pirates will host Oak Hall 7 p.m. Friday, in the second round of the state playoffs.

There are 16 teams remaining in the state tournament. If the Lady Pirates win Friday night, they would be two wins away from playing in the state championship. Matanzas would play either Episcopal, Ponte Vedra or Bartram Trail in the next round — the regional semifinals, where eight teams would be left.

Last week, Matanzas defeated crosstown Flagler Palm Coast, 8-5, in the District 4 championship.

+ FPC baseball rallies, beats St. Augustine
Flagler Palm Coast plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning Friday night, defeating St. Augustine, 9-8, in the final game of the regular season.

The Bulldogs (12-12) were led in hitting by Lorenza Williams, who went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Third baseman Josh Greiner went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks. Quadre Butler went 2-for-4 with a double.

After the Bulldogs took a 7-2 lead, St. Augustine rallied to score five runs in the top of the seventh inning, going ahead 8-7. But in the bottom of the seventh, FPC scored two runs for the walk-off victory.

FPC (No. 3 seed) played Mandarin (No. 2 seed) Tuesday in the District 1-8A semifinals. Check www.PalmCoastObserver.com for updates.
