Matanzas had a two-out, bases loaded throwing error in the bottom of the first inning Wednesday night, and the Lady Pirates couldn’t rebound against Baker County in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals, losing 6-0, and ending its season.
Matanzas finished the season 12-14. Amber Johnson (10-12) was the losing pitcher for the Lady Pirates.
Coach Sara Novak said it was exciting for her team to experience the state playoffs for the first time.
“This was an awesome experience for our team and an accomplishment that some teams never get to see,” Novak said. “I am very proud of them.”
Novak said the team will continue to do strength and weight training in the offseason, which she says helped the team this year.
“We have showed true progression as a team, and this season showed that by going this far and having this accomplishment for our program,” Novak said.
Gabrielle Prickett and Ashley Pelose each went 1-for-3 with a single.
Matanzas wins uniforms competition
Last night, it was announced that the Matanzas Lady Pirates softball team won the $15,000 Dress the Champion grant by Allen Sportswear.
The money will be spent for new uniforms and equipment.
“Not many teams get this opportunity,” coach Sara Novak said. “This is a great feeling for us. This shows us where our heart is and how much our school and community is behind our softball team at Matanzas.”
Flagler Palm Coast loses to Lake Mary
The Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs softball team lost to Lake Mary, 4-0, in the Class 8A regional quarterfinals Tuesday night.
FPC (21-6) was outhit in the game, 9-5.
Starting pitcher Morgan Lambert gave up two runs in 2.1 innings of work.
Destiny Kelly and Sam Mittel each had two hits.
